アメリカ・テキサス州出身の写真家ジョゼフ・スターリングの写真集「The Age of Adolescence」。シカゴのニュー・バウハウス（Chicago Institute of Design / I.D.）で、ハリー・キャラハン、アーロン・シスキンド、フレデリック・ソマーに写真を学び、同校の卒業生であった石元泰博ともフレンドシップを持ち、教えを請うたスターリング。同窓には、レイ・K・メッカーを始めチャールズ・スエドランド、ジョセフ・ジャックナ、ケネス・ジョセフソンらが名を連ね、彼ら5人は当時将来を嘱望された写真家として「I.D.5」と評されていました。本書は、スターリングが1960年代前後に撮影したティーンエイジャーの図版で構成された一冊。写真家曰く、写真のみならずトータルなビジュアル・エデュケーションを学んだからこそなしえた構図美そして独創性。ニュー・バウハウス特有の無機質な造形美のみならず、ヒューマニティーに富んだスナップも素晴らしい。ブックデザインはブルース・ウェーバーでお馴染みのディミトリ・リヴァス。5,000部限定。

ティーンエイジャーといえば、Bruce Weberの『O RIO DE JANEIRO』などございますが、Bruceの華やかさやファッション的な感じではなく、Bruce Davidsonの『100th stree』や『Photographs』などの、街と人々の営みに近いと思います。Josephは1936年生まれで、Bruce Davidsonが1933年生まれと時代が近いからでしょうか。
『BROOKLYN GANG』が頭をよぎる、青春の書（写真集）として傑作のひとつ。
